Academic & Age Requirements:

Academic: Students trying out for interscholastic athletic teams must be in the 7th or 8th grade in order to be eligible. For the first semester, a student must have been promoted to the next grade level. For the second semester, a student must also have passed all but one subjects at the conclusion of the previous semester completed in order to be able to participate in school sponsored athletics in the current semester.

Age Requirement: Student must not have reached his or her fifteenth birthday on or before August 1, 2018.

Physical Examination Requirement:

All student athletes' VHSL 2017-2018 physicals expire on June 30, 2018. Therefore, in order to participate in any athletic activities including Patriot Pride, school-sponsored camps, open gyms, or any other school-related sports after June 30th, a student-athlete must obtain a new VHSL physical and submit it to the athletic director.

Managers: Any 7th or 8th grader who wants to be a manager must be approved by the coach and submit all parts of the VHSL physical form EXCEPT the doctor examination page.

Yearly Policy Requirement:
2018-2019 Meetings Below: DO NOT PROCRASTINATE!! If you are remotely considering playing a sport, go to a MAY meeting! Other meetings for winter and spring sports will be scheduled later in the year.

July 18th, 6:00 pm at Central Academy Middle School
July 24th 5:30 pm at James River High School  (DATE CHANGE)
July 25th, 6:00 pm at Lord Botetourt High School
July 26th, 6:30 pm at Read Mountain Middle School

  • ***The requirement for an athletic policy meeting has changed. Athletes and one parent only have to attend one meeting during middle school. The drug/concussion pledge form must still be completed again each school year. You can take care of this at the first parent meeting for your sport.

In summary, if the athlete has never attended a meeting, then he/she must go just once with a parent before participating in tryouts or practice. If the athlete has been to a meeting before, he/she only needs to complete the drug pledge form once he/she has earned a spot on the team. This must be done at the first parent meeting. The athlete will not be allowed to practice until it is signed.

The meeting will cover the new Botetourt County Concussion Policy, the Botetourt County Drug and Alcohol Policy, Drug Testing Policy, as well as VHSL and school rules and information. All prospective 7th and 8th grade athletes for the upcoming season are required to attend one of the 2018-2019 Athletic Informational Meetings with their parent or legal guardian before they can begin practice.
