What is the ACP?
The Academic Career Plan (ACP) is a working document that students begin at some point during their 7th grade year in their Career Exploratory Class (7th grade music students will meet with a counselor sometime during the 7th grade year to get their ACP started).
This fluid and ever changing document starts to identify how a students’ interests, strengths, and values can support their future career goals. The ACP also lays out a 4 year academic plan that supports the students interests/strengths and career goals.
Refer to the “Counseling” tab of the website to see how the CAMS School Counseling Center delivers Academic and Career Instruction at each grade level. https://cams.bcps.k12.va.us/parents/guidance/counseling
Ways For Parents To Assist In The Career Development Process:
Encourage your students to show you their Major Clarity account. This is a program that is introduced to them in the Spring of their 6th grade year. https://majorclarity.com/
Help your student log all careers they have interest in learning more about. A good place to do this is in the “Journal” section of their Major Clarity Account.
Make your child aware of the connection between education and careers. Talk about how you apply your own education to your daily work.
Involve and encourage friends, relatives and acquaintances to talk to your child about skills and values they see in the workplace.
Plan leisure time activities that explore interests, abilities and skills.
Allow your child or other students to shadow you for a day at your workplace. (Shadowing is when a student attends work with an adult for a day to learn more about a career in which he/she is interested.)
Seek other job shadowing opportunities in the community for your student.
During vacations, work with your child to explore the occupations and careers that are abundant in your community. Review newspapers and attend business and community meetings.
